Hello Kossacks:
Did any of you catch the latest on the Free Press today? Rep. John Conyers just sent out two scathing letters that are aimed to make heads roll. It is a good day after all. . . .
First, you probably read that earlier this week Ohio's Attorney General Jim Petro posted a press release (see Ohio Attorney General Press Release re Sanctions ) stating his intent to sanction the attorneys who filed a lawsuit against the State of Ohio on the grounds that the Presidential election was not performed fairly. Uh--you remember--something about count every vote, no more suppression shenanigans and exit polls not adding up. [More below the fold]
Now, today,
Rep. John Conyers has responded. He just wrote the Ohio Attorney General to rebuke him (and you can write him, too, here's his contact info.:
Attorney General Petro's contact info. ) Rep. Conyers letter tears into Attorney General Jim Petro for daring to sanction the Arnbeck, et al., who filed the lawsuit against Ohio for the funky way the election was handled. Read to the end, it gets really good, he demands a full accounting by Attorney General Petro of all other lawsuits calling for sanctions from his office. Further, Conyers not so subtley implies that the motivation for sanctions against the attorneys is nothing more than political revenge. (Really? Do people do that?)

Then, it gets even better, Rep.John Conyers also wrote the exit pollsters, Edison/Mitofsky, who came out today with their lame explanation as to why their exit polls were off in excess of 5 pts. (You know, exit polls discrepancies that cause civil wars in other less democratic countries.) This is the same Edison/Mitofsky who refused Rep. John Conyers' House Judiciary Commitee requests for the raw data of their exit polls. He says he doesn't buy their explanation, and, again, please send the raw data--there's nothing less than our democracy at stake. Rep. John Conyers' incredulous letter to Edison/Mitofsky
We've got to support our courageous Rep. John Conyers. I say send him a love letter and ask him what we can do for him. Rep. John Conyers' Contact Info for Hero Worship

UPDATE: January 21, 2005
Yet another great piece from the Free Press. This one by Harvey Wasserman titled “Bush/Rove’s new Ohio attack is about revenge, intimidation and contempt for American Democracy.” Please check it out--it’s really concise, and it touches on some critical issues and the future of democracy.” Harvey Wasserman article on the Free Press
Here’s an enticing snippet--though this piece deserves its own diary for full appreciation:
The only reasonable conclusion that can be drawn from the actions of the Republican Party in Ohio is that it has something fearsome to hide. The only obvious reason for this attack on those who would look under the rocks is that the GOP never expected an internet-based, grassroots effort to force a Constitutional crisis over their divinely sanctioned control of the American electoral process.
